The latest version of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods has introduced a new marking for goods classed as Marine Pollutants - the Environmentally Hazardous Mark. This is also known as the Environmentally Hazardous Substance Label
The IMDG Code implemented this marking for Marine Pollutants on the 1st January 2009; it becomes mandatory on the 1st January 2010.
Environmentally Hazardous Substance Labels are printed on self-adhesive vinyl to BS 5609. 250 x 250mm.
The Environmentally Hazardous Substance Mark / marine pollutant label, according to IMDG 5.2.1.6.3 should be used along side the hazard warning diamond on outer packaging of cargoes containing materials that are considered to be marine pollutants. Great emphasis on the proper manner in which Environmentally Hazardous Substances should be labelled when packages containing Environmentally Hazardous Substances are being shipped by sea is also planced in The Merchant Shipping (Dangerous Goods and Marine Pollutants) Regulations of 1990.
Depending upon the regulations by which environmentally hazardous substances / marine pollutants are being shipped, the marine pollutant severity is can be classed as a severed marine pollutant. Such marine pollutant chemicals include: Aldrin (severe marine pollutant) and Nickel cyanide (severe marine pollutant).
More common (and less severed marine pollutants) that also require labelling include: Alcohol C-12 - C-16 poly(1-6) ethoxylate and Warfarin (and salts of).
The new Environmentally Hazardous Substance mark / marine pollutant label used to package shipping containers carrying marine pollutant goods / environemtally hazardous substances is now a 250mm x 250 mm diamond.
